A person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with a death at an apartment complex in Vista.

A homicide investigation was launched after a man was found at about 4 a.m. unconscious and lying on the ground with visible injuries to his upper body, San Diego Sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said.

Two people living in the apartment complex noticed a trail of blood leading to an open apartment door and found a man lying face down.

"It’s unusual to find such a violent crime," Lt. Williams said.

He was pronounced dead shortly after medics arrived.

The person of interest was taken into custody a few blocks from the complex, on Grapevine after a report of a crash.

The person is not considered a suspect at this time and SDSO has not yet said how the person of interest is related to the death.

The Sheriff's Homicide Unit was called to the apartment complex and has taken over responsibility for the investigation.
