Sheriff's Department Awarded Grant for DUI Enforcement

Drunk drivers should be warned the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will be stepping up DUI enforcement and checkpoints.

A $500,000 grant awarded from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will fund a year’s worth of special operations and campaigns for the Sheriff's Department designed to stop intoxicated drivers.

"Thanks to this grant, deputies will have access to additional resources that will help them keep our communities safe from impaired drivers," said Sheriff Bill Gore.

DUI checkpoints, patrols, warrant sweeps, distracted driving and traffic enforcement will all be funded by the grant.

The goal is to reduce DUI-related crashes and deaths in San Diego County.

So far this year, more than 1,200 people have been arrested for DUI by Sheriff's Deputies. In 2014, the Sheriff's Department arrested 1,610 people for drunk driving.

Funding for this program is from OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
