San Diego County Sheriff's Patrol Car Strikes Pedestrian in Mobility Scooter

Officials say Deputy Khristina Gimeno was behind the wheel of the patrol car involved in the collision

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has released the name of one of its deputies whose patrol car struck and injured a person using a mobility scooter in an Encanto crosswalk on Friday.

Sheriff's officials announced Saturday that Deputy Khristina Gimeno was behind the wheel of the patrol car during the crash which occurred around 8:40 a.m. at 65th and Imperial, according to San Diego police.

Video captured from a nearby surveillance camera shows the dramatic moment when the patrol car struck the scooter.

Witnesses say the injured woman is often seen in the area, and had just done some grocery shopping at a nearby store. The tomatoes she purchased were still on the street as officers investigated.

The woman was transported to Mercy hospital and is expected to recover. She had no broken bones but suffered a cut to her eye and complained of hip and neck pain.

Train services in the area were re-routed as police investigated.

A witness told NBC 7 the pedestrian crossing signal was illuminated and the woman in the scooter had the right of way.

San Diego police said Gimeno was at fault but she will not face criminal charges.

Gimeno has been with the Sheriff's department for eleven years and is assigned to the Sheriff's Court Services Bureau, according to officials.

According to Sheriff’s officials, she was in the area serving court papers and documents when the collision occurred.

Gimeno reportedly told investigators she never saw the pedestrian in the crosswalk until right before she hit her. Officials said Gimeno hit the brakes as the vehicle and the scooter made contact.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department will launch an internal investigation.
