Sharp Mary Birch Reveals Top Baby Names of 2013

Alexander and Olivia were the most popular names in 2013 at the San Diego hospital

    The top baby names in San Diego in 2013 seem to mirror the rest of the country, with a few exceptions.

    According to the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, Alexander was the top name for boys and Olivia the top name for girls last year.

    At 12:02 a.m. on New Year's Day, little Jacobo Ayala was born to first-time parents Vanessa and Juan Carlos Ayala at Kaiser Permanente in Grantville, making Jacobo the hospital's first baby of 2014. A couple minutes later, Madison Sydney Shenkel was born at Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. (Published Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014)

    The girls list almost mirrored the national baby name list, complied by BabyCenter. The national list ranks Olivia as the third most popular name for girls.

    Local boy names were slightly different from the rest of the country. Alexander ranked Number 17 on the national list. Also, Sebastian, Number 7 at Sharp, only ranked 51st nationwide.

    BabyCenter compiled its annual list based on the names of 555,000 babies born in 2013 registered on the BabyCenter website.

    • 264 sets of twins
    • 6 sets of triplets
    • 1 set of quadruplets
    • 52% boys
    • 48% girls
