The state shut down two day care businesses in Escondido after it was revealed that a sex offender not only owned the home but had been spotted visiting the property.
Escondido police are warning residents and parents about registered sex offender Matthew William Matchett.
Matchett, 65, who lives in Escondido, has been at day care centers in the 600 block of Pitman Street and the 600 block of Carlann Lane, our media partners the North County Times reported.
Matchett was seen at the centers after 6 p.m. and on weekends, Escondido Police Lt. Craig Carter told the paper. He said police do not have any information that Matchett that is currently breaking the law, nor he is not wanted for any crimes.
According to the Megan's Law website, Matchett was convicted of "lewd or lascivious acts with a child under age 14." The site states that he was living on Old Guejito Ranch Road.
According to court documents, Matthew and his ex-wife, Vivian Matchett, own the properties where the day care centers are located.
"He is not a predator and he was never in contact with any kids," Vivian Matchett said.
She also said Matchett was never at either day care center when children were being cared for and said parents of the children were told that Matchett is a register sex offender and still chose to have their children cared for there.
