Sewage Spills into Batiquitos Lagoon

Crews posted warning signs on Carlsbad State Beach after a sewage spill in Encinitas Wednesday.

An air vac malfunction at approximately 8:26 a.m. caused thousands of gallons of sewage to spill into Batiquitos Lagoon, according to a spokesperson for the Leucadia Wastewater District.

Crews were able to fix the air vac within 30 minutes and recover about 150 gallons of the sewage, Robin Morishita said in a written news release.

Warning signs were posted on the beach about 1000 feet north and south of the lagoon outlet and will stay there until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.

For updates on beach closure information, a 24-hour hotline is open at (619) 338-2073.
