Semi Used to Steal ATM

Even up against a semi, the ATM wins.

Chula Vista police are looking for several suspects who tried to steal an ATM overnight.

Just before 3 a.m. Friday, a dark blue/green semi-truck with lights along the top, minus the trailer, pulled up, backed into the ATM at the Bank of America in the Otay Ranch Shopping Center.

The would-be thieves knocked the ATM over and then tried to get the ATM into the bed of a red pickup truck.

But when they weren't able to lift it in, they took off.

Officers say they know all of this information because the attempted theft was caught on surveillance video.

Officers say it's similar to a string of incidents that have happened over the last several months. In most cases there were four men wearing dark clothing driving a red pickup.

“I think they're getting bolder maybe trying to take larger machines so they're going to need a bigger vehicle to do so," said Eric Tarr with Chula Vista police.

The four suspects were last seen driving southbound through the mall parking lot as they got away.
