Scripps Researchers Identify New Vulnerability in HIV

Researchers expect the discovery will be useful in developing a vaccine for HIV

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have discovered a new vulnerability in the HIV, which can be attacked by the human immune system so it neutralizes a wide variety of HIV strains.

“HIV has very few known sites of vulnerability, but in this work we’ve described a new one, and we expect it will be useful in developing a vaccine,” said Dennis R. Burton, professor in TSRI’s Department of Immunology and Microbial Science.

The study is part of a larger scale project funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and the National Institutes of Health to develop an effective vaccine against HIV.
