Several hundred students at Millennial Tech Middle School were evacuated Friday.

Police were called out to the school in the 1100 block of Carolina Lane in San Diego on Friday morning after a school administrator called to say that a student had a device and that he was in the principal's office. San Diego police sent out a K-9 and members of the Metro Arson Strike Team to the scene.

Later in the day, police said that the child involved is 11 years old. The student, who has not been identified, was detained, according to police.

School staffers  are at 4900 Hilltop Drive, police said, and students who have not yet been picked up will be with staff on the playground. Parents or guardians picking up children should bring  identification with them, authorities urged. Parents can also call the school at 619-867-3255 or 619-704-5736.

The school will remain evacuated until the device can be examined and, if necessary, removed or detonated.
