Neighbors Save Veteran from Santee Mobile Home Fire

The 94-year-old veteran was home just before 8 a.m. when fire sparked in the attic of his home inside Cameron’s Mobile Estates on Magnolia Avenue.

Neighbors jumped into action Thursday and saved a World War II and Korean War veteran who was home alone when smoke filled his Santee home.

Dave Shuler, 94, is hard of hearing and uses a wheelchair to get around.

Shuler was home just before 8 a.m. when fire sparked in the attic of his home inside Cameron’s Mobile Estates on Magnolia Avenue.

Someone reported seeing flames coming from the roof of one of the homes on the property.

When neighbors saw what was happening, some of them ran inside to get Shuler to safety.

The residents of the mobile home community really care about him and it showed today.

Santee Fire Department Chief said the house's roof had recently been remodeled. The cause of what sparked the fire was still under investigation.

No other information was immediately available.
