Family, Pets Escape House Fire

San Diego County sheriff’s deputies say the San Marcos garage was filled with hay

A San Marcos family escaped a house fire Tuesday but once outside, they realized their pets were still inside the home.

The fire broke out in the garage on Tres Ranchos Lane around 10:30 p.m.

San Diego County sheriff’s deputies say the garage was filled with hay.

The mother and her 11-year-old daughter told deputies their pets were still inside the house during the fire.

A deputy and a neighbor were able to rescue the animals.

“At that point I saw the whole garage engulfed on fire,” said neighbor Jeff Ferguson.

Ferguson said once he located the family, the deputy had arrived and went in to get the animals.

Firefighters extinguished the fire within 45 minutes.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is unknown.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross set the family up with a place to stay for the night.
