San Diego Safari Park Keepers Share Trick to Feeding a Giraffe

A baby giraffe took his first bottle on exhibit with the rest of the herd Thursday.

Congo is just two months old and already living in the East Africa habitat of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido.

Zookeepers must feed Congo because his mother died earlier this month. Apparently the trick to feeding a giraffe is to do it from the back of a truck and use a spotted blanket.

β€œWhen you’re giving a bottle to a giraffe you want to simulate going under the belly of his mother. So that’s where the blanket comes in. He has to go searching in that blanket for the bottle and he did perfectly,” said Senior Keeper Eileen Neff.

Congo has been paired up with a 2-year-old giraffe named Leroy. Two other female calves, Siri and Yamakaui, were born this summer at the Safari Park.
