Police Shoot ‘Violent' Suspect in North Park

No officers were injured in the shooting

A man seen yelling and firing a rifle into the air was shot by police officers Saturday night in North Park, officials said.

Witnesses called police when the suspect began acting "violent" around 7:30 p.m. Saturday night near the intersection of Louisiana Street and University Avenue.

The man was reportedly firing a rifle into the air and toward two restaurants in the area. When police arrived, they saw the suspect standing at the intersection, wearing camouflage clothing and holding a rifle.

Officers called out for the suspect to drop his weapon several times, but he did not comply. Instead, police said he allegedly pointed his rifle in the direction of the officers.

One of the officers at the scene – a four-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department – drew his service weapon and shot the suspect in the torso.

San Diego police officer Dino Delimitros confirmed that an officer was involved in the shooting. NBC 7 later learned that no officers were injured in the shooting.

The injured suspect was transported to a hospital, Delimitros said. He is expected to survive.
Police said he will likely be booked into custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

Several streets in the surrounding area were temporarily blocked off for investigation following the officer-involved shooting.
