Weekend Brings High Temps, Heat Advisory

Forget the scarves - San Diegans sported bathing suits and headed for the beach, despite the fact that its mid-October

It may be mid-October, but it sure didn’t feel like fall on Saturday and Sunday in San Diego.

A weekend heat wave brought high temperatures and an advisory, and drove locals and visitors to the beaches.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory, effective through 6 p.m. Sunday, for San Diego, citing temperatures between 87 and 97 degrees in parts of the county. By 11 a.m. Sunday, it was 90 degrees in downtown San Diego.

According to NBC 7 meteorologist Greg Bledsoe, temperatures on Saturday were 10 to 15 degrees above normal. He said the coast would experience highs in the upper-80s to low-90s, while inland areas would see temps in the mid-90s to low-100s.

The NWS said extra precautions should be taken amid the heat wave, including limiting your time outside, to prevent heat-related illness. Wearing lightweight clothing and drinking plenty of water is also important, as well as scheduling strenuous outdoor activities for early morning or evening hours, once it’s cooler.

Bledsoe said the temps should shift by the end of next week – and maybe even bring some rain to the region.

“Any cooling will be very gradual towards the beginning of the work week, but by Thursday and Friday, we should be back down to seasonal norms with even a chance for showers later in the week,” he explained.
