San Diego Not a Top 10 Beach Town: Survey

City 1 of only 3 in California to make national list

San Diego has sunshine, surf and sand, but that's not enough to be among the 10 best beach destinations in the United States, according to an online award survey published this week.

TripAdvisor, which its website describes as the world's largest travel site, placed San Diego's beaches at No. 11 on its inaugural top 25 Travels' Choice Beaches Award list based on millions of traveler reviews on its site.

Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and Cape May in New Jersey led off the list and were followed by six Florida and two Hawaii cities.

TripAdvisor summed up San Diego's beaches below its ranking:

Beaches and bays dot the coast of California's second-largest city. Top-rated, family-friendly Coronado Beach is set among turn-of-the-century mansions. Other gorgeous sandy spots include Blacks Beach, where sunbathers go au naturel, and La Jolla Shores, popular for snorkeling and kayaking.

Laguna Beach at No. 18 and Santa Barbara at No. 25 were the only other California cities to make the list.

In February, Yahoo! Travel named San Diego's Coronado Beach one of the top 10 beaches in the world.
