San Diego Launches ‘Housing Our Heroes' Program

The city of San Diego wants to get a thousand homeless veterans off the streets in the next year through a campaign called "Housing Our Heroes."

Mayor Kevin Faulconer kicked off the campaign Wednesday at an apartment complex in Sherman Heights.

San Diego wants to spend $12.5 million in city and federal funds.

Faulconer said the money would incentivize landlords who rent to homeless veterans, pay security deposits and rent and provide job training, counseling, and substance abuse treatment.

Army Veteran Oliver Matthews lives there through Section Eight housing.

"I know it's a lot of us still out there having a hard time, and I just have high hopes that they might become just as I am, living in a better situation than we were,” Matthews said.

Funding for the "Housing Our Heroes" campaign still needs approval.

It goes before the San Diego Housing Commission February 12 and the City Council in March.
