New Park Dedicated in Name of Late Councilmember

A new park named after the late San Diego City Councilmember Charles Lewis was dedicated Thursday.

Councilmember Lewis, was a strong advocate for City Heights where the park now sits.

He was also indicted on federal corruption charges and died before getting the chance to clear his name.

Charles Lewis III City Park stands as a ringing endorsement by this community of his innocence in the political scandal which clouded his last days in office.

A celebration marked the official unveiling of a nearly 6-acre park with 4 acres of it set aside as protected natural parkland along a canyon

While future generations who visit won't remember Lewis, the park stands as a tribute to a councilmember who fought to make his community a more beautiful place.

Lewis's homegrown steady rise to the district 4 council seat took a sudden turn in 2003 when he and two other council colleagues found themselves in the middle of an FBI investigation.

Charged with receiving campaign contributions from a strip club owner to relax local regulations - Lewis pleaded not guilty delivering a fiery vow to fight for his name.

Lewis died unexpectedly in 2004 from health issues.

Federal prosecutors dropped the charges against him.
