San Diego City Council Approves Brown Field Airpark Project

The redevelopment project will span 20 years

San Diego City Council has approved a redevelopment of Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa, involving more than $900 million in planned improvements over the next 20 years.

Metropolitan Airpark, a four-phase commercial development, will cover about 331 acres of the city-owned, 880-acre facility near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The first phase calls for a 116,875-square-foot fixed-base operator facility for private aircraft, 10 large-aircraft hangars, 45 small-plane hangars and solar-powered storage and support facilities, with a restaurant and other commercial elements.

Proponents say the project is aimed at creating a more vibrant business climate in the cross-border region.

City officials have projected the development would generate $11 million in gross revenue in the first five years and $619 million over 20 years.

The city has been in talks on the project for several years with Brown Field International Business Park LLC, which includes Carlsbad-based Distinctive Projects Co., led by Richard Lee Sax.
