Military Community Honors Fallen Service Members

Special memorial service to be held at The Rock Church Wednesday morning

San Diego's military community will honor the fallen service members during a special service at The Rock Church in Point Loma on Wednesday morning.

The memorial service will focus on the 30 Americans who were killed from a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Aug. 6.

Family members and fellow service members will gather in a private memorial to mourn and reflect. The ceremony will be an opportunity for loved ones to share their memories of those brave fallen heroes -- mostly elite Navy SEALs-- in a solemn memorial. Members of the Naval Special Warfare community are expected to attend the event.

The memorial ceremony is closed to the general public and the media -- out of respect for the grieving family and friends.

On Tuesday, Petty Officer 1st Class Jesse Pittman of Willits, Calif. was buried in a private ceremony at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.  Petty Officer 1st Class Darrik Benson, who grew up in Napa Valley, was also laid to rest there on Monday. And during the weekend, a memorial service was held in San Jose for Navy SEAL Kevin Huston who trained here in Coronado.

August has become the deadliest month yet for U.S. troops in the decade-long war in Afghanistan -- with 66 U.S. service members killed.
