A Southwest Airlines plane on the way to San Diego was struck by lightning Thursday morning, airline officials said.
The plane from McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas was approaching San Diego just before 7 a.m. when it “sustained a lightning strike,” Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Emily Samuels said in an email.
The plane then landed safely at San Diego International Airport.
Samuels said the aircraft is now out of service and is being inspected.
Travelers scheduled for an outgoing flight to Phoenix on the aircraft have since boarded a new flight, as of 9:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
The lightning strike occurred just as the National Weather Service had issued an aviation weather warning for San Diego's airport, for “cloud to ground lightning."
