The bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego lost his battle to cancer on Saturday, the Diocese confirmed.
Bishop Cirilo Flores, 66, was suffering from an aggressive form of advanced cancer affecting his bones.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego released this statement on his passing on its website:
“Bishop Cirilo Flores passed away peacefully at 2:47 this afternoon at Nazareth House in San Diego. At his bedside were his cousin Dr. Tom Martinez, Msgr. Steven Callahan and the Sisters of Nazareth. Please remember Bishop Flores and his family in your prayers. Details regarding the funeral rites will be announced as soon as they become available.”
Flores was receiving treatment at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. He was transferred to the Nazareth House senior care facility in Mission Valley on Friday, Monsignor Steven Callahan said earlier this week.

The plan was for Flores to receive palliative care at Nazareth House. Callahan said the bishop was too weak for chemotherapy.
Flores was ordained in 1991 and became Bishop of San Diego in September 2013. In April, he suffered a stroke inside the diocese office.
