Local Artists Up for Grammy Awards

The 55th annual Grammy Awards take place Feb. 10 in Los Angeles

Several San Diego artists were among those nominated for Grammy Awards Wednesday.

The Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2013 Grammy Awards Thursday. Six artists were tied for top nominee. Read more here

Among the locals up for a statue, Chula Vista native Tom Waits’ “Bad as Me” earned a nomination in the Best Alternative Music Album category.

Waits, who first played in the R&B group the System in the '60s around San Diego, was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame last year.

Aztec alum, jazz musician Gregory Porter, is nominated for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his performance "Real Good Hands."

Up for Best Folk Album are Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer & local musician Chris Thile with the recording “The Goat Rodeo Sessions.” Thile is from Oceanside.

Nominated for Best World Music Album is Ravi Shankar for his records “The Living Room Sessions Part 1.” These days, Shankar is a resident of Encinitas and has performed recently in Escondido.

His daughter, Anoushka Shankar, is also nominated in that category for her recording of "Traveller." According to the bio on her website, she was raised between London, New Delhi and California.
