Rollover Crash Victim Helps Guide Rescue Crews, Dies From Injuries

He initially stayed on the phone, guiding rescuers to his location

A man who called 911 to report that the Jeep he was driving fell 100 feet down a Southern California hill has died.

The vehicle went off a dirt road in the foothills above Cal State San Bernardino shortly before noon on Sunday, according to Rodd Mascis, a spokesman for the San Bernardino Fire Department.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that the man was ejected from the Jeep and that at some point, the vehicle might have rolled over him.

He initially stayed on the phone with dispatchers, telling them he had injured his leg and helping guide rescuers to his location.

Mascis said he was unconscious when rescuers reached him around 12:30 p.m. He was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died.

The man's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
