Police say they received reports of Herlevic, 45, firing shots from an apartment in the 1400 block of Petree Street at 8 p.m.

Officials say he was firing through walls and windows in every direction.

According to authorities about an hour after they arrived the suspect stopped shooting, walked out his front door and surrendered. He refused to lie down on the ground though, and a police dog had to be used to get him safely into custody.

He was arrested on multiple felony counts of Shooting at an Inhabited Dwelling and was booked into San Diego County Jail.

Herlevic indicated to police there might be someone else inside, but after searching with a canine they didn't find anyone.

During the whole ordeal neighbors were told to shelter in place. Some residents were evacuated.

Cindy Branam has been Herlevic's neighbor for over a year and says she's been concerned about him.

"I live upstairs two over, and at first I wasn't sure what it was. It sounded like somebody dropping something from like a ten-story building that weighed a lot because actually it was so loud," Branam told NBC7. "I realized and remembered that he does have a shot gun. And at that point I ran to my hallway with my cats and just turned the lights off...cause I was scared and I opened the front door and there were police and snipers and they told me to run out my front door to the left to go away from that area."

Officers stayed on scene into the early hours of Sunday morning obtaining a search warrant to fully investigate the apartment.

No one was injured in the incident.
