A police chase in South Bay in the middle of the night ended with two women hospitalized and one man in jail.
The incident began around midnight in Chula Vista in the 500 block of Telegraph Canyon Road. Investigators said police saw four people run out of a Rite-Aid to a car outside. Two women got in the front seat, and one man jumped in the back. Another man fled on foot, according to investigators.
Police chased the vehicle for three minutes with their lights and sirens on, but it failed to stop, instead, the car accelerated prior to the driver losing control on East J Street in Chula Vista, skidding off the road and smashing into a condo on Valdivia Court.
No one inside the condo was injured during the crash, but neighbors said the event was very disturbing.
"We just heard the big bang after the police sirens, and then next thing we know, police started chasing some figures inside and apparently two other people were in the car, and apparently the car flew just in between the house and the wall," said a neighbor who identified himself as Matt.
The male suspect got out of the vehicle and ran away, but police caught up with him and took him into custody. Officers later identified him as Joseph Cuevas. They said he is a suspect with a felony warrant issued by the U.S. Marshal's service.
The two women inside the car were hurt in the crash and were rushed to the hospital.
Police said on Tuesday morning that -- based on the car's license plate -- they believe at least some of the vehicle's occupants are suspects in a prior grand theft of gardening equipment that occurred earlier in the night.
