SUV Crashes into Kids' Room

It’s amazing no one was killed. That’s what firefighters said about an accident in Clairemont Mesa Sunday.

An SUV slammed into a two-story apartment building and landed inside a child's bedroom. The vehicle stopped just short of two beds, made up with pink and green sheets.

Even though it was just after noon when the crash happened, there were no children sleeping in the room. Instead, the family was all together in the living room and uninjured in the crash, firefighter said..

“This was very fortunate that we didn’t have anybody trapped underneath the vehicle,” said Battalion Chief David Pilkerton, San Diego Rescue.

“The potential of this is unbelievable,” he said. “We could’ve had electrical, gas, smoke and fire along with the vehicle and trapped victims. This actually, fortunately, turned out to be the best-case scenario.

The accident did serious damage to the Desert Spa Apartments. Eight people were displaced on both the ground and upper floor.

The driver was uninjured.

Firefighters called city engineers to check the stability of the unit. San Diego Red Cross will accommodate the displaced residents, four adults and four children, for the next few days.
