Aztecs to Play in Poinsettia Bowl

Aztecs will face their longtime rival the BYU Cougars in the December matchup

San Diego State University accepted an invitation to play Brigham Young University in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

The Mountain West co-champion Aztecs will play in the annual bowl game on Dec. 20 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Head coach Rocky Long, who has given NBC 7 San Diego exclusive weekly updates on the team's progress, said he's excited about the chance to play in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Not just for the honor and the experience but also because of its location.

"Best of all, we will have the opportunity to play in front of our fans and that will make for a great atmosphere on Dec. 20,” Long said in a news release.

The Aztecs beat Wyoming in Laramie 42-28, finishing the season 9-3 and earning a share of their first MWC Championship. It will also be their last as SDSU heads to the Big East in 2013.

It was the 19th conference championship in Aztecs history, but the first since 1998, their final year in the Western Athletic Conference.

The December 20th game will be the school's third straight bowl appearance. SDSU beat Navy 35-14 in the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl.

In 2011, the team were bested by the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns 32-30 in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.
