SDPD Officers Chase Escaped Suspect Through Downtown San Diego and Into Water: PD

A cuffed domestic violence suspect escaped from police custody as he was being processed and made a run for the harbor, San Diego police confirmed.

The 42-year-old suspect, identified as Joaquin Castro, somehow escaped custody near SDPD headquarters downtown while still in handcuffs, police confirmed.

Castro took off running, heading toward the San Diego Harbor, police said. When the suspect reached The Fish Market, he jumped into the water.

Police apprehended Castro near the G Street Pier.

Castro was wanted in connection with an incident that happened at 8 a.m. Sunday near Lincoln and Ohio Streets. A woman, who police determined to be a victim of domestic violence, was running down the middle of the street.

When officers arrived, Castro fled the scene on a bike and then on foot before ultimately barricading himself in a garage on Illinois Street.

A team of four to five officers went into the garage, and although Castro resisted arrest, they were able to subdue and detain him.

The victim’s purse and credit cards were found in the driveway outside of the garage.

Castro is due in court on July 26. He is currently being held without bond.

It is unclear what additional charges he may face following his second escape.
