SD Warships Leave for 7-Month Deployment

3 Warships Tasks Will Include Fighting Piracy

Three San Diego warships will leave Tuesday on a 7-month deployment on a  mission to provide humanitarian aid, support operations overseas, and combat piracy, the North County Times reports

The USS Boxer, an 844-foot amphibious assault ship, the USS Green Bay, an amphibious transport dock, and the USS Comstock, an amphibious dock landing ship will leave port with around 2,200 Marines and 1,800 sailors will be onboard, a Camp Pendleton spokesperson said.

These three ships are part of Camp Pendleton's 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, known as the “Fighting 13”. The North County Times reports that it was the first Marine unit to see action in Iraq in 1990 when it seized two Iraqi tankers whose crews were in violation of United Nations sanctions.
