Some think it’s an angel, others a crucifix. But the true meaning of the design found in a fallen tree near an Escondido church may be in the eye of the beholder.

Landscapers noticed the artful image after cutting down a tree that was about to fall near the First Congregational Church of Escondido.

Dark marks in sections of the logs appear to show the shape of a cross or possibly a winged-angel crowned by a halo.

Jim Rants, owner of San Marcos-based Star Landscape Maintenance, discovered the image with one of his workers.

"It's a divine intervention," Rants told the North County Times. "Pretty amazing that something like that would appear on church property."

Pastor Phil Corr of the Church plans to show the logs during the church service on Sunday, saying it fit well with his sermon entitled "The surprise of joy."

"It's like a Rorschach test of faith," Corr told the North County Times. "People of faith have eyes to see this, and skeptics have always been around and are welcome to their opinion."
