Diver Found Dead in La Jolla Identified

The man was spotted in full scuba gear just south of the Children's Pool area

A person walking by the La Jolla coastline spotted the body of a scuba diver Sunday.

Lifeguards said the man in his 30s washed up along the reefs near a beach called "Hospital Point" just south of the Children's Pool area. Lifeguards were called around 8:30 p.m.

The medical examiner has identified the diver as 35-year-old Jimmy Somphirigna Tanovan of Oceanside.

Emergency crews attempted to perform CPR but said it was apparent Tanovan had been dead for several hours.

The driver was wearing full scuba gear. Lifeguards impounded the gear and will transfer it to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to assess if there were any malfunctions in the gear.

Witnesses told lifeguards they saw the man hours earlier going diving for lobsters.

No cause of death has been identified.
