Work Begins on $316M Rental Car Center, Aviation Complex at Lindbergh Field

The complex is set to open in 2014, with an early 2016 debut

San Diego International Airport has begun construction on its new $316 million rental car center and a $39 million fixed base operator (FBO) facility for general-aviation services, both on the northern side of the airport.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which oversees airport operations, said initial construction includes pile installation and will continue through early 2014 during daytime hours.

The FBO complex is set to open in 2014, with an early 2016 debut expected for the rental car center. Officials said the projects will create approximately 7,000 related jobs.

The consolidated rental car center, spanning 2 million square feet, is intended to reduce traffic congestion and related pollution now generated by the shuttle vans of several rental car agencies, which operate from locations throughout the downtown area.

The FBO will house hangar, fueling and related aircraft services for general aviation.
