S. University City to Get SDFD Fast Response Squad

A Fire-Rescue Fast Response Squad (FRS) should be in full operation in South University City by the end of January. The two-person team will be located at 3034 Governor Drive.

A Citygate Associates consultant report identified South University City as one of 19 areas in the city underserved by fire and emergency medical services.

The squad will not give the full capabilities of a fire station or fire engine, but it will mean faster response times.

The two-person crew would be made up of a fire captain who is a paramedic and a fire fighter who is an EMT. They have a complement of tools, equipment and medical supplies. While they carry water and foam, they are not able to hook up to a fire hydrant. Traditional teams have four people.

The FRS will be dispatched along with a fire engine from a neighboring station and an ambulance if necessary.

The FRS in Encanto has significantly increased response times in the last year according to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials.

The squad will be active from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.
