Rural Fire Agencies Merge

About a dozen rural fire agencies in San Diego County are merging into one.

About a dozen rural fire agencies in San Diego County have merged into the Regional Fire Authority responsible for nearly 1 million acres in the unincorporated areas.

The Board of Supervisors authorized the formation of the authority in June and set aside $15.5 million in funding.

County Supervisor Dianne Jacob says the Fire Authority "will provide stronger and better coordinated services to over 50 fire stations in the most fire prone areas of the region."

An effort to consolidate rural fire agencies in the county had been under way since the devastating wildfires in 2003.
