Coast Guard Hoists Ill Man From Cruise Ship Near San Diego

The crewmember aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship was experiencing symptoms of a heart attack while at sea

A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) crew from San Diego rushed to the aid of an ill man aboard a cruise ship near Point Loma, hoisting him from the ship so he could get emergency medical treatment on dry land.

As seen above, officials released black-and-white video of the operation Saturday, which shows the moments when the USCG crew medically evacuated a crewmember from the Ruby Princess ship as it cruised about nine miles southwest of Point Loma.

At around 11:35 p.m. Friday staffers aboard the cruise ship reported that one of their crewmembers – a 47-year-old man – was experiencing symptoms of a heart attack at sea.

The USCG’s Sector San Diego launched its MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter at around 1 a.m. and, within the hour, the ill crewmember was being hoisted onto the aircraft.

By 2:45 a.m. Saturday, the Jayhawk was touching down in San Diego, where an ambulance was waiting to take the man to a hospital in Hillcrest. The man’s condition is unknown.
