Robber Went After Elderly Woman With Belt: Cop

A woman was arrested Thursday after a brutal beating of a North County senior earlier this week, according to the sheriff's department.

The incident took place at about noon on Tuesday, according to deputies investigating the case, who said the 71-year-old Vista woman was n the victim of an armed robbery in her East Vista Way home. Detectives believe that Carey Lynn Barton, 47, entered the victim's home through an open door.

During the robbery, Barton punched the woman in the face and attempted to strangle her with a belt, then fled with a car that was at the victim's home, according to officers.

The victim knew Barton, investigators said, and officers were able to arrest Barton on Thursday at the Escondido state parole offices. Barton is being booked into the Vista Detention Facility for charges including residential robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, battery and dissuading a witness.
