River Path Del Mar Extension Opens

The trail goes along the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar, and will eventually hook up with the Crest Canyon trail system and go all the way to Torrey Pines State Beach

City and County leaders celebrated the opening of the River Path Del Mar Extension with a ribbon cutting over the weekend.

The project, which began in February goes along the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar, and will eventually hook up with the Crest Canyon trail system and go all the way to Torrey Pines State Beach.

“We’ve done this in partnership with the city of Del Mar and…a $150,000 grant from the City,” Trish Boaz, Executive Director of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy said. “The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy matched that dollar for dollar to put this river path in place to give an up-close and personal association with nature for people of all ages and abilities.”

“It is one part of a major overall community transplant. You will eventually, with the third phase that will be starting soon, connect up with Crest Canyon, go all the way up the Crest Canyon Trail, connect up with the east annex of the Torrey Pines trail and go all the way to Torrey Pines State Beach.”

County Supervisor Dave Roberts, who jumpstarted the project, said it was a dream come true.

“One of my priorities and the priorities of the County Board of Supervisors is to protect and preserve our communities, to add open space and trails,” Roberts said. “Today we’re extending this trail. This is a 70-mile long park that runs through the heart of my district…People refer to this as the Yosemite of California.”
