A riot involving 134 inmates broke out Thursday at San Diego’s Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, and three inmates were rushed to the hospital.
The riot escalated from two inmates who started fighting just before 11:30 a.m. near the workout area, leading to others joining in on the brawl, prison officials said.
To corral the group, officers fired four foam rounds and three warning.
Three inmates were taken to the hospital for treatment and other inmates suffered minor injuries and were treated at the prison, officials said.
On Friday morning, the three inmates were sent back to the prison after receiving treatment at the hospital.
The prison, located in the Otay Mesa area, was placed on temporary restrictions as officials investigated the incident; the inmates involved in the riot have been placed in segregation units.
An investigative team with the state’s prison system also will investigate the incident as well as the response by correctional officers.
