A man was jailed Friday evening after he allegedly set his girlfriend on fire at a home in Oceanside, just north of San Diego.
According to the Oceanside Police Department (OPD), suspect Ricardo Gonzalez, 33, was involved in a fight with his girlfriend in the front yard of a home in the 3600 block of Cerro Avenue when the quarrel turned violent.
Gonzalez allegedly grabbed a can of gasoline from the garage, drenched his girlfriend with the gas and then set her on fire using a lighter.
Officers were called to the home around 3:30 p.m., the OPD said, after a third party reported the woman had been set on fire by the suspect.
The victim was taken to UCSD Medical Center with significant burns. She is expected to survive.
Gonzalez suffered minor injuries, but did not need medical attention. He was interviewed by officers at OPD headquarters. During the investigation, officers learned of the altercation between the couple and how the victim was set on fire.
Gonzalez was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on one count of attempted murder and a count of felony domestic violence. He expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
