Owner of restaurant opened fire on suspected armed robber

Investigators are looking into a San Carlos robbery in connection with the death of a man in Corridor.

Police responded to reports of an armed robbery restaurant in the 7200 block of Navajo Rd. just before 9 p.m. Friday night.

The suspect, disguised with a bandanna covering his face, held the clerk at gunpoint and demanded cash. When the owner of the restaurant heard the commotion, he confronted the suspect with a gun himself.

The suspect pointed the gun at the owner, and the owner shot the suspect, police said.

The suspect fled, escaping in a red convertible waiting nearby.

About 15 minutes later, officers were called to reports of a man stumbling along a sidewalk in the 4100 block of 40th st.-- nearly 8 miles away from the restaurant. The man told police he was shot, and in need of medical care.

Medics arrived and transported the man to a hospital. He was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries just after 10 p.m. Friday.

The suspect description in the robbery matches the shooting victim's. Homicide detectives are investigating the crimes together to determine whether they were related.
