Little Girl's Body Found Near Border

A girl found faced down in the mud is believed to be one of two missing children.

A little girl’s body found faced down in the mud in the Tijuana River Valley is believed to be one of two children who was last seen two weeks ago when their car flipped over and was swept away during a week of powerful winter storms.

Pio Cruz, a volunteer with the Desert Angels, was walking through the park at the west end of Monument Road around 10 a.m. Sunday and spotted the body.

"At first I saw it, I'm thinking it was a dog or something but no way, when I got more close, I saw the body," said Cruz.

A five-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy were inside a car that was trying to cross a flooded Tijuana street January 20. The car was swept up in the current, killing a pregnant woman and 10-year-old child.

The five-year-old and two-year-old were washed away in the flood prompting an intense search in the area for days.

"We suspect that it is the same, however, that is not, at this point, that still needs to be confirmed, but it looks like our suspicion is that it is," said Lt. Margaret SanFilippo with the San Diego sheriff's department.

Family of the missing children wait for DNA results to confirm if the body is that of their relative.

Lifeguards think the bodies were swept from the Tijuana side to the U.S. side though large tubes, big enough for a person to walk through.

Another toddler’s body was found in Border Field Park near the U.S.-Mexico Border last Wednesday, but investigators did not believe it was one of the two missing children.
