Law-enforcement officials from the military and state and federal agencies temporarily replaced hundreds of Tijuana officers who were relieved of duty, according to a published report.

Officials said the municipal officers were going to undergo "retraining" and background checks near Tecate at a state police academy, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Officers who are flagged during the training and investigation process will by let go by the department, according to the paper.

Last week, 20 city officers were arrested for suspicion of working the criminal gangs operating in the region.

  • Baja Texan Wednesday, Dec 3 at 7:20 PM FLAG COMMENT I have lived between Rosarito and Ensenada for over a year. I have no fears about traveling in Rosarito and Ensenada --- but I do remain vigilent (as I would traveling in LA or NYC). I don't go to TJ unless absolutely necessary, not because of the violence but because of the traffic congestion. The violence is gang on gang targeted violence --- just like in the US.
  • gringo 2 Wednesday, Nov 19 at 9:32 PM FLAG COMMENT Take all the confiscated drugs, add rat poison, and release them back onto the streets. Keep doing that and eventually America's demand for drugs will dry up.
  • Heckler Wednesday, Nov 19 at 7:49 PM FLAG COMMENT You have a better chance of getting killed by a car over here than being shot in Mexico. It's not the tourists that have to worry.
  • Anonymous 1 Wednesday, Nov 19 at 1:58 PM FLAG COMMENT I agree with Foothiller . . . used to love to bring out of towners to places between Rosarito and Ensenada, shopping and eating, even loved camping, but too scared now.
  • miguel Wednesday, Nov 19 at 10:16 AM FLAG COMMENT This brings a breath of hope that someone is willing to step up and actually do something about this plague. Corruption has always been a part of the mexican society and the chain needs to be broken. I commend the mayor for keeping his promise and for fighting for the people of Tijuana.
