San Diegans donated $150,000 Thursday to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego through the “Red Shoe Day” fundraiser.
More than 1,200 volunteers hit the streets of San Diego Thursday morning with iconic big, red, size-14 clown shoe containers used to collect donations for the Ronald McDonald House, which helps provide food, lodging and other services for families with critically ill or injured children being treated at local hospitals.
Volunteers posted up at major intersections throughout San Diego County, including downtown San Diego, for the annual fundraiser and collected cash in their red shoe containers.
Those who missed their chance to donate Thursday can still make donations of $1, $3 or $5 at cash registers at local McDonald’s restaurants through July 1. A final tally of the funds collected through the 2012 “Red Shoe Day” will be announced July 14.
“The generosity of San Diegans came pouring out today and the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego is excited to put the money to use providing hot meals, comfortable beds and emotional support to families who need it most,” said Chuck Day, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, Thursday in a press release.
