RSF Residents on Alert After Mountain Lion Spotted

Residents are being told to keep an eye on kids and pets

Residents in Rancho Santa Fe are on alert after a mountain lion was seen lurking around the neighborhood.

The Department of Fish & Game is asking residents to keep small pets inside and not to leave pet food, food or trash that may attract animals. Officials are also urging parents not to leave young children unattended outside. Walkers and joggers in the area are advised to avoid exercising at dusk or dawn, when cougars are most active.

A newspaper delivery person first spotted the big cat about two weeks ago, according to Fish & Game. The animal was apparently chasing a coyote near the Rancho Santa Fe Library.

If you spot a mountain lion in your area you are advised to contact Fish and Game at 858-467-4257; if the animal is being aggressive toward you, call 911.
