Authorities confirmed Saturday that an eight-month-old baby from Ramona has died after sustaining serious injuries while at home with her babysitter.
On Wednesday around 11:30 a.m., emergency crews were called to a home on Southern Oak Road east of Mount Woodson in Ramona after receiving a report of an injured infant.
When authorities arrived, they discovered eight-month old Liliana Velasquez suffering from critical injuries. They transported the baby by air to Rady Children’s Hospital.
On Saturday, investigators confirmed Velasquez had died from her injuries at Children’s Hospital on Friday at around 4:35 p.m.
The cause of death has not yet been released by the medical examiner and the results of the autopsy have been sealed by the Sheriff’s Department.
Detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff's Child Abuse Unit, Sheriff’s Homicide Detail and Sheriff’s Crime Lab are investigating the baby’s death.
On Wednesday, a maintenance worker at the Ramona home said he was on the property that morning when a man ran out and told him that the baby had rolled off the couch, onto the floor and passed out.
The man and his wife had been living in a rented granny flat on the estate according to the maintenance worker. The couple has two daughters – the eight-month-old and a three-year-old.
The mother, who works as a cook at a restaurant, was not home at the time of the incident said the worker who asked not to be identified.
The homeowner had just purchased the home two months ago as a foreclosure and is in the process of fixing it up so no one lives inside the home, the maintenance worker said.
No further information has been released about the baby’s parents.
