A large and potentially dangerous October storm system moved ashore in San Diego County Thursday.
Rain showers and thunderstorms will accompany the storm and are capable of producing brief heavy rain, hail, gusty winds and frequent lightning according to the National Weather Service.
NBC 7 Meteorologist Jodi Kodesh said by noon the storm was heaviest in the foothills near Ramona and in central areas of San Diego, with light rain in other parts of the East County.
Earlier Thursday morning, heavy rain was reported from San Clemente to Downtown San Diego. Thunder and lightning was heard and seen in Carlsbad as the storm made its way into the North County.
The rain and thunderstorms continued off and on through the rest of the day.
Earlier Thursday morning, the NWS issued a special marine warning for the coastal waters from the San Mateo Point south to the U.S.-Mexico border that expired at 8:15 a.m PT warning of a line of thunderstorms heading toward Oceanside in San Diego County.
Boaters were told to expect gusty winds, high waves, dangerous lightning and heavy rains the NWS forecasts. Thunderstorms like the ones associated with this storm can also produce sudden waterspots.
Runoff could be seen going into local beaches, reminding people it can be unsafe to swim right after a storm.
Kodesh said the storm should still be hanging around during the evening commute and throughout the night until early Friday.

“Rain, possible thunderstorms with this and we are looking at scattered showers all day long,” Kodesh said.
This storm should result in light to moderate rainfall from 0.25 to 0.75 inches of rain, according to the NBC 7 News in the Morning meteorologist.
“When all is said and done, it’s not a big wash-out weather-wise,” she said.
