Qualcomm, Timex Collaborate on Smartwatch

AT&T stores are now selling a Timex smartwatch, which the Connecticut watchmaker built in collaboration with Qualcomm Inc.

The Ironman One GPS+, announced on Feb. 20, costs $400.

The watch is a freestanding wireless device, able to communicate with the outside world without the aid of a smartphone. In addition to logging a runner’s speed, distance and pace, the device can send music to a wearer’s Bluetooth earphones.

Other features include email-based messaging, the ability to send location information to someone else and an always-on Mirasol display.

The Timex project is an outgrowth of Qualcomm’s Toq watch project. In August, Timex said that its watch would be available in the fall.

The watch, also available through Timex’s website, comes with a year of service on the AT&T wireless network. An additional year of service will cost $40, AT&T said.

Timex is entering the market as Pebble releases a new smartwatch, and with Apple poised to launch its much-anticipated watch in April.
