Putting the Brakes on Illegal Street Racing

Offenders get a lesson in road safety.

Several police agencies from around San Diego have teamed up to try and stop illegal street racing.

On Monday, they released a public-service announcement, which they hope will cut down on street racing injuries and deaths. The PSA is paid for by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety.

"Illegal street racing may be seen by some as a youthful right of passage," said District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, but all too often, she added, it ends in death.

Since the grant was awarded, punishment for illegal street racing includes volunteering at Race Legal-- a legal racing venue. Defendents help get the track ready and learn about safety attire, car safety inspections and safe driving skills.
