If marriage is a gift from God, a Christian/religious...thing...then why does the government have a say in it? You can't say gay people can't get married because God said so. I don't believe in a God, and if I so choose not to get married in a church, then did I violate your idea of what traditional marriage is, between a man and a woman under God? Riiight. Religion should not be entangled with laws, and using your religious beliefs to judge someone else is the worst thing. Ever. What if a Satanist got control of an office and said sacrificing animals was now legal? Likewise, one person does not represent everyone. Not everyone carrying Yes on 8 is a religious nutjob deserving of a slap in the face. Not everyone carrying a No on 8 is a graffiti artist and insane liberal. • post114 Friday, Nov 7 at 12:18 AM FLAG COMMENT Are you saying that gay married couples don't take their marriage vows seriously, and somehow their marriage ruins the sanctity of heterosexual marriage? I think everyone has their own religious conviction, or otherwise, of why Prop 8 should or should not pass; however, judging someone with religious conviction defies the Constitution [separation of church and state.] In no way do I condone people who vandalize private property and prohibit freedom of speech. But if marriage really just is a title, then why do people support it? I think marriage is subtly different for different people, so to one person, the whole point of marriage is to make babies and continue the bloodline while for another it's a permanent declaration of their love or whathaveyou. Personally, I think the government should just give civil unions to everyone and people should get married in their church, through a ceremony, or whatever. Isn't it kind of interesting, though? Prop 8 has passed, but people WILL take it to the courts. People will sue, and counter-sue. The CA Supreme Court has already declared it unconstitutional, and I doubt the majority of the judges would rule in favor of taking away rights. Restriction of rights is one thing, giving rights THEN taking them away is another. But eventually, the case would probably move up to the Supreme Court, and they would probably make it unconstitutional to ban gay marriage in California [considering we already made it unconstitutional to begin with]. So now it's not even a local issue- it's nationwide. Ironically, a lot of people who were for gay marriage were glad that Prop 8 was passed since now, the courts must rule on it, and given the logic behind it all, it's highly probable that the courts will declare it unconstitutional. If Prop 8 failed, then gay marriage would have been constricted to California, but if it ever gets to the Supreme Court, all states would have to recognize it. ... MORE >
