ChargePoint, a Northern California electric charging station operator, said it’s launched a program along with the participation of the city of San Diego and the California Energy Commission to install 206 electric vehicle charging stations at apartment locations in San Diego County.

The program allows condo and apartment property owners to apply for free EV chargers, with applicants assuming the costs for installation.

Given the county has some 4,000 electric vehicles, there is a need for more public charging stations. Putting the stations in apartment complexes will help to satisfy the current demand as well as help apartment residents make the move to using electric cars, the company said.

“This collaborative program demonstrates the commitment in this region to encourage EV adoption,” said Pasquale Romano, ChargePoint CEO.

Under the program, property owners can defray most of the cost of the EV charging stations, and will also receive a federal tax credit of 30 percent on the installation cost, the company said.

The deadline for applications for the program is March 1, 2014, but those considering the stations should apply early as there are a limited number of stations, the company said.
